Linux v. MS v. Mac

Mac is the best, if you're rich and can keep up with everything being very expensive. I noticed that my Mac-Mini that was $450 new, and four years later it's $350 used. By contrast, a computer that doesn't need anything Mac, is just virtually free a few years later. If you buy a non-Mac machine on e-Bay that's a few years old, the shipping might be the most expensive part of the transaction.

Linux is the best if you're poor, like me, and have some nerdism within. Also, interstingly, some Linux distros, if you're not hooked on multimedia but like to just do e-mail and informational web surfing involving mostly text and photos, then Linux performs way better, is way faster, and requires no money, and any old cheap computer will do. In this case, computing becomes almost free.

Windows is good if you only have a little money to buy a machine now, thus avoiding the high front-end cost of Mac. But this only applies if you think that soon you'll be coming into a lot of money, because if you're not a Windows expert geek, then soon your machine will need a clean install, and if a person is not a computer person at all and doesn't know what a clean install is, well, they'll be paying as much as several used computers on repairmen who'll have to keep debugging the system or reinstalling it totally.

If a person is a clean-install type of person, then even if they have little expertise beyond that, then a nearly-free used PC with various Linux distros on various drives will have all one needs without having to do the dreaded install of new programs.

Microsoft is way better when it comes to installing new programs. Linux tries to claim rpm and apt-get and yum and synaptic are good and that they're unfairly misunderstood. But, I've been on Linux for years, and the codecs and the dependencies and the terminal work and proprietary free/non-free blocks that are built into Ubuntu and Debian are a total madness.

Windows Is Nice If You Like DVDs

Windows is nice, at least when you first buy it, before it degenerates into a giant, virus-filled gas balloon, And one great advantage is when you first buy it, you can just plunk in a DVD of any kind, and it simply plays the movie. Sadly, Linux is usually hooked up with Totem Movie Player.

Totem is the most useless multimedia player on the planet. It's main function seems to be simply listing formats to which it is hostile. In my case, I use Linux for fast internet stuff based mostly on text and graphics and stay away from all video and animation or anything Flash-based. Oh yeah, but usually Linux distros have a pretty good CD player. I've been puttering around, off and on, in terminals for years trying to find simple ways for "newbies" to get around many of the absurdities of most distros, but to little avail.

Put another way: If a guy like me who has been playing with Linux off-and-on for half a decade, and who is proficient in Windows, Mac and Linux desktops, and sometimes runs all three at once, has to struggle to get a half-functioning system in Linux, well, then we have a long way to go.

All that being said, I'm still rooting for Linux and intend to play around with it for a long time to come.
